Ravin R29X Crossbow Review and Buying Guide

The all-new Ravin R29X is a brand new model from Ravin Crossbows for 2020. Their flagship bow shoots at extremely impressive speeds of 450fps. with their standard 400gr. arrow. The R29X is built on a nearly identical platform as the R29, and the new crossbow also features a brand new silent cocking mechanism, eliminating the clicking noise heard on all previous Ravin crossbows. Let’s take a closer look at what makes the R29X such an impressive crossbow.

R29X Main Features

Silent Cocking Mechanism

The R29X is the first model in the Ravin lineup to do away with the annoying clicking sound heard when cocking the bow back. The new design makes the entire process completely silent while cocking and decocking the bow. Although the clicking noise isn’t all that loud on the other two bows, in a completely quiet setting like the deer stand it could be audible.

Ultra-Compact Design

The R29X is extremely compact, both in length and width. The bow’s total length is just 29″ from the front of the bow to the buttstock, and is extremely narrow both in the cocked and uncocked position. When cocked, the R29X is just 6″ wide, and when it’s uncocked the bow is 10.5″ wide. There are no other bows on the market that have the same level of performance in such a small and maneuverable package.

Helicoil Cams

The Helicoil cam system is an amazing cam design that allows these bows to do what they do in such a small package. On each shot, the cams rotate a full 340 degrees. While cocking or shooting the crossbow, Helicoil cams stay perfectly level by winding the cables on both the top and bottom of the cam. This makes for a consistent, repeatable, and accurate shooting platform.

Trac Trigger and Frictionless Flight Rail

Unlike many other bows on the market, Ravin incorporates a built-in trigger that slides down the rail to connect to the string prior to cocking. This ensures that the trigger box is latched in the same spot on the string every time, which is a similar concept to having a consistent anchor point with a compound or recurve bow.

Another unique feature of the R29X is the Frictionless Flight Rail. On most crossbows, the arrow rests on the rail or “barrel” and as a result, creates friction when fired. The Ravin arrow snaps onto the string and then rests on two nylon rollers at the front of the crossbow. This eliminates nearly all of the friction caused by the arrow contacting the rail.

The R29X shoots 450fps. with Ravin’s included arrow and a 100gr. field point. Their arrows weigh 300 grains without a field tip, so adding a 100-grain field tip gets your total weight to 400. This is a heavier arrow than a lot of other manufacturers provides, so the fact that they are still able to get 450 feet per second out of it is amazing. A heavier arrow will not only increase your penetration, but it will also help to stabilize your arrow in flight.

TO BE DETERMINED! We are going to be one of the first to get our hands on this new crossbow. The anticipated ship dates are sometime in March. By every stretch of the imagination, we fully expect the R29X to shoot just as accurate if not more so than previous Ravin Crossbow models.
